The Suns had a nice run of success in 2019 but were dealt their first loss by the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. Ja Morant has been playing at a high level and showed what he’s capable of with this game-winning shot over Devin Booker, who was up to his old tricks.

Ja Morant is a player who has shown that he’s the ultimate challenge-taker. He did this with his game-winning shot over the Suns.

Ja Morant, the top point guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, felt the heat little over a week ago. After sustaining an ankle injury earlier in the season, Morant saw his club go 10-2 and become an NBA darling while he was out, only to return to the lineup and see the Grizzlies lose two consecutive games.

After facing hostility from Memphis fans, Morant may have given up. Instead, he responded to the situation on Monday, putting on a show against one of the greatest teams in the Western Conference and reassuring supporters that he has the confidence and talent to turn the Grizzlies into serious playoff contenders.

In the most important of occasions, Ja Morant shines brightly.

Ja Morant is getting into the habit of playing “statement games.”

Remember the Western Conference play-in game in Oakland last season, when the Grizzlies faced an MVP-level Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors? Morant acted as a spoiler. Ja scored 15 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including a game-winning dagger shot with less than five seconds remaining.

Despite the fact that the Grizzlies lost their first-round contest against the Utah Jazz, Morant led them to victory in Game 1 and finished the series with 30.2 points, 8.2 assists, and 4.8 rebounds. Even when Memphis didn’t have enough for Utah, he never crumbled under pressure.

But first, let’s go back a little farther. During his second year at Murray State, Morant’s prominence grew steadily. Despite this, he didn’t receive the opportunity to play in front of a national audience until the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019. In a first-round upset of Marquette, the former Racers star delivered on his first taste of fame, scoring a spectacular triple-double. It symbolized his transformation from unremarkable recruit to first-round draft choice.

In summary, Morant has consistently shown his ability to face obstacles head-on. So, with his back against the wall, he showed his tenacity against the Suns on Monday.

Morant stunned the Suns by defeating them.

Morant was adamant about not allowing the Grizzlies to lose against a Suns squad looking to rebound from a Christmas Day setback to the Warriors.

On 14-of-25 shooting, the Grizzlies’ star scored 33 points, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. In the third quarter, he scored 15 points, virtually single-handedly keeping Memphis in control of the game.

Phoenix fought back in the fourth quarter and seemed to be on the verge of completing their comeback when Devin Booker scored a go-ahead 3-pointer with seconds left. Ja, on the other hand, had something different in mind.

Morant got the ball on the left wing with Memphis behind by one point. He drove straight at Suns defensive ace Mikal Bridges with little under four seconds left. Despite Bridges’ constant pursuit, Morant absorbed the collision and eluded Booker’s help defense, putting the ball up and in to give the Grizzlies a thrilling win.

The point guard for Memphis continues to play as if he has something to prove. He’s just 22 years old, but he’s already established himself as one of the NBA’s best challengers.

Adding to his “gamer” reputation

Morant’s longtime position as an underdog had given him cause to play with a chip on his shoulder, but this outing against the Suns felt different.

The Grizzlies started the season as a Western Conference underdog. They are, however, the No. 4 seed almost halfway through the tournament. They’re no longer a slumbering behemoth capable of sneaking up on opponents.

The Suns were beaten by Memphis. Morant and the Grizzlies responded to Phoenix’s retaliation. Furthermore, after his ugly comeback against the Oklahoma City Thunder last week, Ja offered a revealing answer to his naysayers.

At worst, Morant’s eagerness to take on new tasks cements his status as a superstar. But, at most, it may make the Grizzlies a legitimate postseason contender.
