Hardspace Shipbreaker Review: The Only Time is Corporate Time

In a world where we are constantly connected to technology, the concept of time has become more abstract. What is 24 hours when you can work from home? When does 9am feel like 3pm? Hardspace Shipbreaker’s unique take on this complex question makes for an experience unlike any other game out there today.

The “hardspace shipbreaker” is a game that has been developed by the creators of “Hearthstone”. The game takes place in an alternate universe where the players are able to create their own cards and use them against other players.

Five minutes remain in your shift, Cutter; wrap it up. My comms are buzzed by Weaver. Only the port side of a mackerel-class ship has to be dismantled for me to be finished. I cram myself inside the opening and begin creating the mounting points for the exterior panels. The airlock entrance is just in front of me. I cut the points for it one at a time before feeling a massive decompression explosion strike me. After entering the spacecraft, I neglected to decompress the airlock. Thankfully, this time the error is minor and it’s only a shell.

In the first-person disassembling simulator Hardspace: Shipbreaker, you play as another blue-collar cog in the machine. Being a new employee of LYNX, the megacorporation that effectively runs everything, your work entails recovering abandoned spacecraft on an orbiting station close to Earth in order to pay off enormous debt.

You see, LYNX truly owns you; they have your DNA and are able to create backup copies of you in the case of your untimely death. This technology is expensive; you are responsible for paying the $1 billion or more cost. Don’t even consider taking a sick day since there is also a daily 0.01 percent interest on it.

In order to earn the most credits and release yourself from LYNX company, you must meticulously disassemble ships, salvaging everything down to the seats. This is where things get interesting. You start out breaking the most basic of ships after a few training sessions to get comfortable with the protocols and your tools. We all have to start somewhere, even when the training wheels are virtually visible riveted to the sides of the vessel. 

With each successful shipbreaking in Hardspace: Shipbreaker, you’ll advance through the ranks and gain access to more challenging ship classes and combinations. Long-haul freighters, scientific boats, fuelling ships, and even double-decker ships are all simply disassembled in numerous shifts. The dangers and benefits increase as the hazard rating rises. 

There are a variety of game modes to suit every player, ranging from the laid-back free-play and the weekly race mode, where competitors battle on a scoreboard for the quickest time and biggest profit, to the hard-core one-life mode and the 30-life max run. If it wasn’t previously obvious, there are a plethora of methods to perish for those who are not paying attention, like flying into a furnace, entire nuclear reactor meltdowns, and explosive decompression.

However, despite the many dangers, Hardspace still manages to have a zen-like vibe that makes you always want to destroy one more ship. They are procedurally created and, depending on the use, adhere to some semblance of a standard layout, which is helpful. There is a fair balance of the known and unknown, allowing you to formulate a strategy for optimizing your effectiveness during a shift but yet needing to remain flexible.

You have two main tools in Hardspace: Shipbreaker: your cutter and grapple, in addition to detonator packs that are obtained later in the game. All of your equipment can be upgraded, but it also has to be kept in good working order since performance degrades as a tool’s durability drops. While moving in the zero-G environment feels nice, crawling through the levels of a spacecraft may sometimes become unsettling. It’s a very “simple to learn, tough to master” kind of system that gives you a sense of achievement as you hone your abilities and execute riskier movements. 

The physics system, which is Newtonian-ruled, adds to the complexity and depth of the situation. If you attempt to drag the 3,000 kg part of ship that your grapple has lassoed, it won’t travel very far until you’ve updated your grappling tool. Early in the game, you discover grapple tethers, which may be used to move objects with their continual weak pull. If numerous grapple tethers are utilized, you can do some impressive feats, such as removing a ship’s side in a few quick movements. 

The game’s last act, which takes around 30 hours to complete, is now available in its full, 1.0 form. It provides you with some background on living in this dystopian corporate future as well as an engaging group of individuals. Everything has a futuristic vibe, from your sparse hotel accommodations to the charming but understated Americana-themed music, which links everything together and gives off the impression that the future may not be that far off. 

Although it might still require some more polish since frames can sometimes be damaged, Hardspace: Shipbreaker is also attractive to look at. The HUD has also gone through a few variations before arriving on a clean, simple design that strikes the ideal balance between providing all the information you want without being overbearing or intrusive.

A fun physics-based puzzle game with something for everyone is Hardspace: Shipbreaker. The surgical sense of disassembling ships, the backstory, and the combination of gorgeous visuals and a folk-inspired music all contribute to a fun experience. The campaign’s narrative is entertaining, and the cast of characters is likable despite certain stereotyped elements. Now is the ideal moment to be ready with version 1.0’s debut.
