Dennis Rodman, the eccentric former NBA player who was once called “The Worm” for his unconventional hairstyle and rebounding prowess, earned $27 million in the league only after working an unexpected dirty job.
Dennis Rodman is a retired American professional basketball player. He was the first North American to play in the Soviet Union, and has been nicknamed The Worm. In his career, he won five NBA championships with three teams.
Dennis Rodman’s journey to NBA fame was far from ordinary. Growing up in Dallas, Texas, the Hall of Famer rarely played sports and spent time on the streets until a dramatic growth spurt prompted him to take up basketball.
Rodman was selected in the 1986 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons, and he went on to play 14 seasons for the team, earning $27 million in on-court earnings alone. Rodman, though, toiled as an airport janitor before becoming an NBA champion and Hall of Famer.
Dennis Rodman had a difficult upbringing.
The majority of NBA players were raised in loving families and participated in organized basketball as a kid. Rodman, on the other hand, had a very different route to the NBA.
Rodman was raised in the Dallas projects with his mother and two sisters. He was a troubled adolescent who didn’t view himself as having much of a future beyond high school, and when he graduated, his mother ejected him from the home because he couldn’t find work.
Rodman told ESPN’s Jackie MacMullen in 2020, “She changed the locks.” “I had a trash bag full of clothes,” she said. I left the home and sat on the stairs of the apartment complex since I had nowhere else to go. I entered my friend’s home. ‘You may remain in the backyard, on the sofa,’ he added.
“I go to the car wash every day when I get up to attempt to earn some additional money. Or I go to 7-Eleven and attempt to fold boxes, toss bottles away, and other such tasks for $5 a day.”
Rodman expected to remain homeless for the rest of his life, but he finally discovered a shady employment that allowed him to get by.

Rodman was left to fend for himself on the streets after being thrown out of his boyhood home. While looking for proper work, he performed odd jobs for very little money until he discovered some at his local airport.
Rodman worked as a janitor at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport for a brief time, but the employment was short-lived. He reverted to his old habits one night when he broke into an airport store and stole a number of watches. Rodman, however, did not get away with the theft and was caught soon after.
He escaped severe punishment, but his days as a janitor were numbered.

Rodman was on his way to nowhere after losing his janitorial job, but he rapidly grew from 5-foot-6 to 6-foot-8 and began to play basketball. He was allowed to continue his career at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he became a highly sought-after draft prospect.
In the second round of the 1986 NBA draft, the Pistons took a risk on the young athlete, and the rest is history. Rodman would go on to be named to eight All-Defensive Teams, win five championships, and be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. According to Spotrac, “The Worm” earned $27.03 million in on-court wages throughout his 14-year NBA career.
