Cam Reddish, the former Atlanta Hawks small forward, is getting a new start, but is it with the right team? After apparently speaking with numerous clubs over the previous two months, the Hawks moved Reddish to the New York Knicks on Jan. 13. The Duke product will now join a New York team that has experienced a roller coaster year and is at 21-21.
The Knicks, though, are not in a position to provide Reddish the greatest chance among the clubs who were supposedly interested in him. If he had signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, he would have been able to show off his playmaking skills on a team that had a legitimate chance of making the playoffs.

The Knicks needed to make a move in order to reclaim the spark they had last season. They’re 21-21 and can’t seem to put together a sustained stretch of good basketball. So, in exchange for Cam Reddish, Solomon Hill, and a future second-round selection, the New York Knicks sent Kevin Knox II and a top-18 protected first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks.
According to The Athletic, Reddish has always wanted to be a facilitator, but his role with the Hawks has largely been that of a spot-up shooter. This season, he has averaged 11.9 points per game while shooting 37.9% from 3-point range in 23.4 minutes per game. The Hawks have also likely struggled to provide Reddish with the minutes he believes he deserves. De’Andre Hunter, Kevin Huerter, and Bogdan Bogdanovic are three additional Atlanta wingers that are deserving of playing time.
Will Reddish, though, get a chance to show off his playmaking skills with the Knicks? RJ Barrett, Evan Fournier, Kemba Walker, Derrick Rose, Alec Burks, and Immanuel Quickley are all healthy perimeter players for New York. They’re all above 10.0 points on average. So, does he have a chance to play the part he wants?
That remains to be seen, but it’s difficult not to question whether he might have been a better match on another squad.

The Knicks weren’t the only club interested in Cam Reddish, it seems.
The Hawks allegedly spoke with the Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, and Los Angeles Lakers in recent months, according to The Athletic. They were hoping for a first-round selection, and although LA allegedly offered two second-round picks, Atlanta ultimately received one from the Knicks, resulting in the latest deal.
However, neither the Lakers nor the Knicks provide Reddish the greatest chance to play the role in which he feels he can become a star. It would have been the Cavaliers, who are aiming to establish themselves as a legitimate power in the Eastern Conference.
Cam Reddish would have been a fantastic fit for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Darius Garland is the Cavaliers’ key playmaker, as we all know. After him, though, they’re rather thin around the perimeter.
Following the season-ending injuries to Ricky Rubio and Collin Sexton, the Cavs are down to Cedi Osman (a spot-up shooter), Isaac Okoro (just 9.0 points per game), and Rajon Rondo, who is a brilliant facilitator but not a reliable scorer.
Reddish would have filled a gap for Cleveland and might have been the Cavs’ second perimeter scoring option right away. Throughout his career, he has showed flashes of what he can accomplish, hitting 21 points in Game 6 of the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals and dumping 34 points against the Orlando Magic in December. The No. 10 overall selection in 2019 just needed the minutes to show himself, which he would have had in Cleveland, where he would have aided a squad that is 24-18 and ranked sixth in the Eastern Conference.
Overall, Cam Reddish will get an opportunity to rebuild his career with the Knicks. However, if the Hawks had moved him to the Cavs, he would have had a greater chance.
